Feds probe J. Markovich insurance policies
HAMMOND | Government prosecutors are investigating whether former Lake County Council President and federal convict Joel Markovich has any money in life insurance policies they could take.Markovich, who pleaded guilty in federal court on August 2004 to pouring concrete as part of East Chicago's sidewalks-for-votes scandal, was ordered to pay $755,088 in restitution as part of his punishment. He already has served an 18-month federal prison sentence in the same case.To date, he has paid $16,285, court records show.But Markovich's life insurance company, Northwestern Mutual, complied with a government request for information last week to report the East Chicagoan has two policies with a total net worth of nearly $200,000.
